David L. Angell

(1946-2001) ~ Inducted 2003

David L. Angell was best known for producing Emmy Award winning shows Cheers," "Wings" and "Frasier."Born on April 10, 1946 in Providence, David Angell was the youngest of three children of Mae Cooney Angell and Henry Angell.  David attended Providence College, where he studied English literature. Following his graduation from PC, David enlisted in the U.S. Army and served at the Pentagon until 1971. He married Lynn Edwards on August 14, 1971 and settled in Providence, where David worked at an insurance firm as a technical writer. David and Lynn took a chance on Hollywood in 1977 where he became eventually a screen writer, selling a story to the producers of  Archie Bunker's Place.  In 1983, Angell became a staff writer for  Cheers as a staff writer, earning an Emmy Award as Outstanding Writing/Comedy.  He went on to win eight Emmys. In 1985, David joined Peter Casey and David Lee as Cheers supervising producers/writers. The team earned 37 Emmy Award nominations and won 24 Emmy Awards, including Outstanding Comedy Series Emmy for Cheers.  After working together as producers on Cheers, Angell, Casey and Lee formed Grub Street Productions.  In 1990, they created and executive-produced the comedy series Wings. David and Lynn Angell established a scholarship fund at PC in 1993. The Angells were passionate about providing access to college for students in need. In 1994, Providence College honored David Angell with an Honorary Doctorate.

David and Lynn Angell died when hijacked American Airlines flight #11 flew into the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001.They were returning home from a vacation on their beloved Cape Cod. 

The American Screenwriters Association awards the annual David Angell Humanitarian Award to any individual in the entertainment industry who contributes to global well-being through donations of time, expertise or other support to improve the human condition.

In 2004, The Angell Foundation of Los Angeles, California awarded Providence College a gift of $2 million for the Smith Center for the Arts. The Smith Center’s 283-seat Angell Blackfriars Theatre is named in recognition of that contribution. Ten years later,  The Angell Foundation donated a record gift of $3.25 million in honor of the College’s 100th anniversary in 2017. The Foundation funds programs in the areas of spirituality, art, youth, education, and social justice. Specifically, at PC, the Foundation's money is also used to help undergraduate students in need.
