Garnett, Norma Ann, 1930-

Norma Ann (Bergquist) Garnett, Doctor Education, an innovative educator, has been a luminary in foreign language education since 1964. Dr. Garnett has instructed thousands of students and mentored hundreds of teachers, while receiving many prestigious local and national honors. She received one of Rhode Island’s first Milken Educator Awards. She was named the Rhode Island Teacher of the Year (1971), the Rhode Island Foreign Language Association Teacher of the Year (1990), and recognized as Teacher of the Year by many other local organizations as well as by her Alma Mater, Colby College, Maine where she was inducted into the national language honor society, Phi Sigma Iota, Omicron Chapter. She received a similar honor at Boston University where she was inducted into the Phi Omega Chapter. In 1991 she was honored at the White House where she was named a Distinguished Teacher by the White House Commission on Presidential Scholars.

Through federal funding and the Rhode Island Department of Education funding, Dr. Garnett pioneered a vibrant expansion of foreign language programs in the Warwick School System. She also initiated a unique language/culture learning program, La Escuelita, the first Rhode Island after school language enrichment program for students in grades 3 to 6. Dr. Garnett has published a myriad of articles and books during her thirty-year public school career, and over the past 20 years, has made presentations at conferences, nationally and internationally.

She has taught foreign language methodology at Brown University, Providence College, University of Rhode Island, and Rhode Island College. Her leadership skills, enthusiasm, and educational initiatives have made her Rhode Island’s leading Global Language Educator.
