Albina Osipowich (Van Aken)

(1911-1964) ~ Inducted 1968

Albina Osipowich (Van Aken), 1911-1964, was the women's swimming star of the 1928 Amsterdam Olympics. Albina, a member of the Pembroke swim team, won gold medals in the 100-meter freestyle in an Olympic record time of 1.11.0, and swam the third leg of the 4x100-meter freestyle relay that set a world record of 4:47.6. She was also a national AAU champion in both 100-yard and 200-yard freestyle events. Ironically, the relay record established by Albina's team was exceeded in the 1932 Los Angeles Games by an American quartet that included another Pembroke swimmer, Helen Johns (Carroll), who also earned Olympic gold for her effort.
