R. Scott Steele

R. Scott Steele: silver medal in yachting--board sailing--in the 1984 Los Angeles Olympic Games.  Scott was born in Newport in 1958 to a Navy family and now resides in Maryland.  Steele, who left Rhode Island at the age of three, began his sailboarding career at St. Mary’s College in Maryland and made the All-American Sailing team twice.  In addition to his Olympic medal, Scott was a world champion windsurfer in 1983, and a silver medalist in that event at the 1990 Goodwill Games.  He received the W. Van Alan Clark Trophy in 1990--an award presented by the U. S. Sailing Association to an American sailor who best exemplifies the ideals and traditions of sportsmanship.

Steele, the father of five, has served as consultant-coach for boardsailing for the U. S. Olympic Yachting Committee.  He has been head coach of sailing at Georgetown University since 1993.
