Dr. John O. Pastore joins his illustrious father as one of the rare father-son combinations to merit membership in the Rhode Island Heritage Hall of Fame.
Dr. Pastore was born in Providence on April 20, 1942 and was educated at LaSalle Academy and the University of Notre Dame, receiving his B.A. in English cum laude. In 1967 he received his medical degree from Yale University School of Medicine.
After graduation Dr. Pastore and his family traveled to Japan where he served for two years with the Atomic Bomb Casualty Commission in Hiroshima and Nagasaki. This experience profoundly shaped his career and his outlook regarding the prospect of nuclear war. Dr. Pastore became an early member of the Board of Directors of the International Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War (IPPNW) and campaigned widely and passionately to spread the message of that organization. In 1983, at the IPPNW’s Third World Congress, he played a key role in generating a paper on “Moral Issues Facing Physicians in the Nuclear Age.” He was elected secretary of IPPNW in 1984 and served in that position when his organization was awarded the Nobel Prize for Peace in 1985. Dr. Pastore, whose father was chairman of the Joint Congressional Committee on Atomic Energy, has been responsible for IPPNW’s interaction with the United Nations, the World Health Organization, the Vatican, and the U.S. State Department.
Since 1975, Dr. Pastore has been on the medical staff of St. Elizabeth’s Medical Center in Boston where his duties include clinical care, teaching, and research with a specialty in non-invasive cardiology, especially echocardiography, a method of imaging the heart through ultrasound. He is a past president of Physicians for Social Responsibility.
Dr. Pastore has been awarded honorary doctorates by Bryant College and Rhode Island College and is the recipient of the prestigious Cavanaugh Award from the University of Notre Dame. He lives with his wife Marilyn in Winchester, Massachusetts. The couple are members of the advisory council for the Notre Dame University libraries. They also own and operate the Inn at Mountain View Farm, a country inn on an historic farm in East Burke, Vermont that also serves as a farm-animal sanctuary. John and Marilyn have three successful sons and eight grandchildren.
