Arthur E. Lake
(1924-2009) ~ Inducted 2003Art Lake was a well-known broadcaster for WJAR for over 60 years.He began is radio announcing career 1944, while studying at Emerson College. He worked on Breakfast Tray, a show which broadcasted from the Outlet Department store in downtown Providence. He was a member of WAJR's pioneer television team in 1949. He worked first as a booth announcer, then program host, news reader and ultimately, weather forecaster.
In the mid-1950s, Lake decided to become the weather forecaster due to his disatisfaction with the quality of the forecasts he was getting from other sources when he was delivering the news. To learn meteorology, he studied weather patterns and maps at the control towers of area airports. Over the years, Lake covered some of the biggest and worst storms of his career, including the infamous Hurricane Carol in 1954, and the Blizzard of ’78 where he was stuck at the State House in a station van. He helped professionalize weather delivery and contunued to deliver forecasts on all of WJAR’s news programs, including “NBC 10 News Sunrise” from 1985 until 2003, when he went on medical leave. He later returned on a part-time basis to read the first birthday announcements on NBC 10 News Sunrise. He retired in 2006.
Art truly loved what he did and was beloved by all who knew him and watched him. He was honored by the New England Chapter of the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences in November 2004 with his induction into the Gold Circle. Members of the Gold Circle are recognized for their significant and long-term influence upon the broadcast industry.
A resident of Greenville, Art Lake died in 2009.
