Dudley Shaw Richards

(1932-1961) ~ Inducted 1968

Dudley Shaw Richards, 1932-1961, a nationally prominent figure-skater who competed in pairs with Maribel Y. Owen at the 1960 Winter Games at Squaw Valley, California, and finished tenth. They won the U.S. championships the following year and finished second at the North American Championships, earning the pair a berth on the World team. Richards, a Pawtucket resident, was a national junior level figure skating champion in 1951. On February 15, 1961, at age 29, he perished in the crash of a Belgian plane with other members of the United States figure-skating team.

In addition to his achievements on the ice, Richards was a graduate of Harvard University. He had also spent time in the Army, and worked as a real estate executive. A now-defunct Rumford ice rink was dedicated in his honor.
