Rev. Joseph L. Lennon, O.P.

Lennon, Joseph Luke, 1919-

Dominican Father Joseph Luke Lennon, a native of Providence, was a member of the Dominican Friars (Order of Preachers) of the Eastern Province of St. Joseph and of the Dominican community at Providence College. Baptized Joseph Bernard Lennon, he was born in Providence, and attended La Salle Academy and Providence College. He completed the pre-ecclesiastical program at Providence College and then entered the Dominican novitiate at St. Rose Priory in Springfield, Ky., receiving the religious name Luke. He began his profession on Aug. 16, 1941 and continued to study divinity.  He was ordained a priest on June 5, 1947, He later earned a Master of Arts degree in psychology from The Catholic University of America, Washington, D.C., and a doctorate in education from The University of Notre Dame, before joining the faculty of Providence College in 1949. He taught education, theology, and philosophy until he retired from teaching with the rank of professor in 1968. Father Lennon also held numerous administrative positions at Providence College, including dean of the college and vice president for community affairs.

Father Lennon also appeared frequently in the media, writing many books on education and sociology, and articles, reprints, book reviews, commentaries, and letters to the editor for various religious, scholarly, and civic publications. He served as an op-ed writer for the Providence Visitor/Rhode Island Catholic and was also was a frequent public speaker and a television and radio personality, appearing on the long-running TV program “Psychology and Everyday Life.”
