Rev. Samuel Hopkins
(1721-1803) ~ Inducted 1999Reverend Samuel Hopkins, 1721-1803, of Newport, was a Congregational theologian and reformer. As pastor of Newport's First Congregational Church Hopkins preached his doctrine of "disinterested benevolence" which led him to embrace the antislavery cause. His impact on 19th-century abolitionist thought was significant.
